I always used to think that the people who created self-portraits were self-obsessed artists, who always chose the same, pained facial expression to represent themselves. So, while I was taking this picture of myself, I just wanted to be me and hide away from my camera. Then, when I started drawing, I was frustrated that this human did not look like me and realized it was because I had auto-corrected her look in a way I never have and never would consciously. So, I fixed her and gave her a background that suited me: a mirror reflecting only what people want to see and a wall of seemingly sturdy, childish LEGO's. By choosing me as a subject matter, I chose a really different approach to my art, one which made me rethink the difficulty and thought process that goes into a self-portrait.
This piece was created using pencils, highlighters, and markers. It is 8.5" x 5.5".
